Hi Folks,

Bit the bullet and forked out the big bucks on a StarCom Digital communications system.

So far very impressed with service from the Australian distributor and the package looks neat and tidy, so far. Will be spending the next few days intalling it and will report back how it all goes.

What I will be connecting to it, and expecting it to do is:

Rider to Pillion Intercom
Music to Rider and/or Pillion via iPhone
Trapster alerts to Rider via iPhone
GPS navigation to Rider via iPhone
Phone calls to Rider via iPhone
Bike to Bike via Uniden UHF CB

Took a very quick picture of where it will be mounted. Fits perfectly, with room to move for all the miriad of cabling this thing takes in, behind the RHS cover where the alarm would normally be fitted.

Will keep you informed.

Gonzo

I used a Starcom Advance for 5 years, on my Tiger 955i and was pleased with it, after spending a fortune over the years on crap intercoms. Last year, during a tour of Eire, my channel stopped working. I had to endure a fortnight of my wife talking to me, with no right to reply. I lost faith in the device and sold it with the bike.

I now have a Scala Rider Teamset, a Bluetooth device, and I'm very impressed. Took me 10 minutes to install, unlike the Starcom which took all of a Sunday. Hint(which you probably don't need): one of the DIN plugs acts as a switch and there's a right/wrong way to plug them in, but this wasn't mentioned in my instructions. After I'd wired it all in, it wouldn't work (it had worked before, on testing). My wife said "Have you tried swapping the leads over?" As I have a degree in Electronic Engineering, I knew the answer could not possibly be so simple and told her she didn't know what she was talking about. When she wasn't looking, I swapped the wires over and hey presto!

Good Luck.

I have had a look at the scala set up , but it all gets too mind boggling. i'm just not up to all that 'i-tooth blue pod'stuff, so I tend to steer away. I would like one for phone and sat nav and rider coms (switchoffable )

I have the Scala blue tooth thingy ma jig (secured from Eight) only to find out me Satnagrivation is FRENCH - yes tried the lauguage change but only french exists !! Still have been brushing up on my Franglais Au rond-point prendre la troisi??me sortie, tournez ?? gauche - now repeat after me..

So a bit of music (to give me a break from talking to myself or even worse a bit of helmet signing ) is nice from time to time. Actuaally I'm a really good helmet singer at 80mph on the bird - wonder if my act would work on X Factor

I have the Interphone F4 system and I must say it's pretty great. It has A2DP bluetooth and overall crystal clear audio. I use earplugs with my full face and hear music and comms perfectly. The operations and pairing are pretty easy too. I haven't used the Scala but the Interphone is a great product. I pair my iPhone to the Garmin Zumo 660 and the Zumo to the F4. It all works seamlessly. I can listen to music from the MP3 player and get instructions on GPS and recieve phone calls or comms if I need. I usually don't pair the phone but am on call a bit so I need to know if I'm getting calls while out riding sometimes. Great product. Web Bike World is a great source of info on the various comms products and they really like this one.

Not likely to die of natural causes. At least I hope not.

Interesting!.......for years I toured all over Europe & used the VTV system, moved to Autocom, which I still used on Harleys until I went to the standard CB system used by the Ultra's.....an intercom system is 'de riguer' on a HD due to the noise! ;)
Now I ride a Thunderbird, and we are back to the VTV (voice-to-voice) system....we can actually talk to each other! - Heavens be praised!! Joan can talk to me quite easily at speeds below 80kph, above that, she just takes in the view & relaxes.

I have had the intercom/music/phone connection on the Ultra...it's invasive, pointless, a distraction....and SPOILS the ride! I love riding my bike, and RIDING is the operative word....... leave all other technology behind & just enjoy the surroundings..

Vote VTV......your partner will love you!! ;) :D

OK, would appreciate some advice for those that have done any electrical work on the Bird to date. I need to power the StarCom, which I am sure I could connect it directly to the battery as they suggest, but I would rather connect it to an ignition key powered line.

Now, I found two plugs which seem to power up with the ignition key. One is on the RHS right near the alarm connector (I don't have the alarm fitted) but this only seems to power up to about 1/2 a volt. What is this plug used for, anyone?

Other one I found powers up on 12v with the ignition, which is perfect, but is located at the front, is a bit fiddly to get to, and I do wonder what it's purpose is for. There are three wires going into this plug: Blue (+12v), Black (Gnd), and a Purple which goes to +1.2v which is weird!

Anyone care to tell me what these two plugs were originally intended for? And how did you power up your 12v device when required?

Much appreciate any assistance.

Cheers,
Gonzo

Don't know any solid answers at the moment - my Owner Workshop Manual is not at hand!

BUT - I do have these photos from when I installed the DS Gear Indicator:

I wired the Gear Indicator into #10 (Ignition).
Other than that I can't really help.

Thanks Birdy. The StarCom1 kit did come with a wire splicer, so I might do like you did.

I did find out what those plugs are, going by the TriumphInstructions.com site:

The front 3-pin plug I identified as having +12+, Gnd, +1.2v is for the heated grips. I would imagine the 1.2v is for the indicator light in the switch. Since I wont be ever running heated grips, I can use that plug to power my UHF CB. Check. :)

The rear 2 pin plug, behind the RHS cover, again as per the instructions for the Accessory Socket, is apparently for that, but the strange thing is that I could not get 12v coming out of it. Ground was there (no resistance between it and the negative of the battery) but I can only get barely 1/2 a volt out of the positive lead.

Maybe the fuse is faulty or something, because I'm sure an accessory socket should be getting 12v.

Will report back.

Gonzo
