I managed to work the towel roll in on the assembly. I ran it down to 30 miles remaining, but when I cranked
it up again it said. No fuel, no bars, Zero miles remaining. I topped to 4.48 gals. So, I guess I had about
6-7 pound of fuel, I didn't bother to siphon. And here's a pic with the tank resting on the bars.

With 4.48 gallons gone, I don't think you could have siphoned anymore out. I had forgot that I was going to install my heated hand grips and filled the tank the night prior I was able to siphon out about 4 gallons or so, but as you say, having about a gallon left is good enough.

Well, just so ya'll know i wasn't exaggerating about the longs vs the shorties, i talked to mickey cohen today about doing my 12k service and i mentioned how the longs didn't ad anything in the way of performance and how the shorties added a lot. He confirmed it by saying "hell yeah, thats why we always put shorties on the press bikes". I asked him why it is that triumph usa and my dealer had no clue about this and he basically said you gotta ask someone who actually has worked on a lot of them. And if anyone has it's surely him. so there ya go...i wasn't having a placebo attack or exaggerating or any of that. It honestly feels like i tacked on a good 6 if not 8 HP with those pipes.

so, $120 to download the tune, but only $160 to install the shorts and download tune.

such a deal.

I bought the longs from my dealer when i 1st got the bike, installed them myself, then they loaded the tune free. So i already had the tune when i got the shorties a couple weeks ago.

I aint buyin' that till I see a Dyno graph of both pipes, on the same bike, on the same day.

Both Long and Shorts are basically a straight through pipe with baffling to the outside wall. I can't imagine a 6 or 8 hp gain just by making one shorter than the other.

No offence, but I like graphs. :)

Well, you can disbelieve if you wish, but you're the one missing out. Remember, i've had both, i said numerous times how i wasn't sure whether the long TORs make any difference at all, and eventually after going back and fourth between the stocks and long tors, I left the stocks on because i preferred the sound and couldn't feel any difference in any way that i was sure of. Then i got the shorts and raved about the power, tone, and lack of vibes. if you feel i'm experiencing some sort of placebo effect then why didn't that happen with the longs, which according to the dealer should get me 7-8 HP? I was all primed to believe it and felt nothing at all. Then i get the shorts with zero expectations except to get access to the axl and a nicer look, and i'm shocked to find a lot better power.

Is there 7 or 8 more HP? I dunno, it doesn't matter. What matters is it goes like i think 7-8 HP more would make it go. heres the deal gonzo....you can believe what i'm saying and try them and possibly be as thrilled as i am, or you can look at a dyno and see that it's 1/2 of what i said i think it is and then pass on them and never know what you are missing. The point is these suckers make a very considerable difference and as you must know owning long TORs, they make none. It's your call, but i'm not a kid. i've been around the block and i'm not an idiot and i'm telling you that knowing the kinds of gains you generally get with pipes and air mods and all, this is one of the better single gains i have ever experience from something as simple as pipes. I'm just trying to somehow use words to convey what i feel is a great mod and much better than the longs to hopefully help some here make what i feel will be a decision they will be happy as fuck with. You may know a good deal about engine tech, but there are too many variables to just write it off by saying they are the same besides being shorter. Who knows what the length could cause, or maybe there IS something different inside you can't see.....less baffle, more baffle, who knows. that can change backpressue a lot. Mickey told me hell yeah, why do you think we put shorts on most of the press bikes when I mentioned this to him. being triumph's press fleet manager and thier pick for top triumph mechanic in the USA i think his word is pretty good.

But keep the longs if thats what you like. I'm just trying to help. But you can't help those who refuse to believe. Again, i've had both, theres a big difference in power and they make the bike smoother, way smoother at high speed. then there are the facts....far lighter, access to the wheel. I adjusted my belt today in literally 2 minutes. Try that with longs. Forget about numbers. If you go by that you're gonna miss a lot more good things than you'll enjoy.

What are the black bits you've put onto the tank to stop your knees scratching the paint?

Looks like it might be a good idea with the soft paint n all!

Those are Griptsters, thin, for Daytona 675. Then there is tankslapper across the top. You can
see the edge of it.

Of course, I reassembled the clutch angle, 1/16" off and dinged the paint myself...described in the
Paint Screw Up thread.

For those that are reattaching the hand grips for whatever reason, there is an alignment mark on the handle bars.

yep, quite a critcal mark, as it turned out for me. my clearance was already very low with adjusting the bars w/new risers.

I ordered the shorts when I ordered the Bird,
the dealer gave me the stock pipes as well on delivery and did the tune for free.
comparing the shorts from when i rode the demo which had long TORS i agree with what you are saying about performance/vibration etc.
Could it be ? they are not fitted stock because of emission rules etc, but the bike was actually designed with these in mind or similar.

Sure seems that way, but i think it's just that they can't do better than they did stock because the regulations on both noise and emissions are just too strict. With the shorts you're tuning the bike much closer to how the engine naturally wants to run. With more mods like opening the airways the bike will run even stronger and even smoother yet. I took the seat duct off and ran it like that for a few miles and it did smooth out even more. It's coming off permanently after i tune the bike. (hopefuly this weekend i will get around to installing the dobeck performance unit on the bike and will do just that)

So, even though I adjusted out the eye busting vib above 80mph with the windscreen angle,
this is still upper on my list. In fact, if I bomb my ECU tonight, these and a new tune will
go on next week.

They just look better. Also, I dragged a tail pipe getting back up on the PCH from a dirt view
spot. I was about a foot of surface difference. I can't see that happening with shorties.

You'll love em. And they look even better in person, to i don't think they look good with the pillion on. For some reason they don't look near as good to me with the pillion seat. Just me i guess. I love them on my bike tho. I would have bought them even if there was no other difference than looks.
