I'll be doing a trip up north this summer and it will be the only time i will likely ever need something to carry some luggage so it needs to be dirt cheap being a one time use. I don't care if it's a plan for a fabrication thing someone has done for the same purpose or what. If i can just get a bar to ties a backpack to i could wear a second one and that would be good enough. Ideas? Remember, i'm living on SS and a savings account and eating is nearly questionable at this point so cheap cheap cheap. Something i could make easily would be good but i don't have any major power tools so keep that in mind too. I have drills and a angle grinder and thats about it. Something cheap thats plug and play would be great. I had one at one point but tossed it for reasons to longwinded to go into, but it was for a suzuki but it fit and was dirt cheap.

I don't have any ideas for you other than what AZ does if its an option. He ships his goods to his destination. Might be worth it.

You know they are half off on the the Triumph site. Of Course even half off is $300 plus.

Wait just a second. I looked in my closet and see If I had anything. I found my set of Moto bags. I used them on my Trip to Az with my son on my 2010 Bird. Just put them over the rear passenger seat and strap them down. They are to high to interfere with the belt. Since I have bags on my Commander and they don't fit my son's Speed triple I don't need them. I'll let you have them for the shipping fee. PM me if you are interested.

Ray's right on shipping, that's what I do. But if it's not an option, considered a backpack (done that too).

Anyway, how many miles/days do you plan to ride (that would help suggestions)?

Also search Craigslist for a companion rider...maybe pack stuff on her bike.

I think i may have found a sissy bar/rack cheap. I just have to ride over to the guy's place and check it for fit, but i think it will with maybe a couple holes drilled. If not i might take you up on it. But how do those stay put? I had a set like that but they wouldn't work without brackets to hold them in place. I had to make them and it never as a very good system.

If I remember I just attached two straps for each side to the bike. i may have used a couple of bungeee cords to be sure. There were fine from Tulsa to Sedona , Az and back. I just used them once to increase my luggage capacity. Most of my luggage was on the sissy bar/rack.

Well, thanks again for the offer Paul, i appreciate it greatly. But i found a sissy bar/rack combo that i can modify to fit and it was under 50 bucks shipped. I really wanted to go with a rack for logistical and other reasons rather then bags and the cost was acceptable. So no need for the bags, but again thanks for the very considerate offer !

Nice, I guess there is no rush once you get there.
I have never been in northern California, but I have seen pictures. The forests are something that I would like to experience. I wonder what kind of bike Big Foot rides

It's nice but I really don;'t want to move there having lived in LA all my life. So my friends and everything i know is here. But given my finacial situation it's really by only option unless i want to live in a really bad area down here. My choices are rural, where i won't be able to get TV reception and will have to deal with propane and cesspools and long drives to stores etc. Or live in LA in a area thats pretty much a slum. The worse part of palmdale is about the only place i can afford in the so cal area aside from some areas that would be unthinkable. So i'm choosing to be close to family and live in a rural but beautiful area. Both have thier perks but i have to go with the sensible choice. Thats not to say it will happen, but i am going to look and if i find the "right" place i'm gone. But whatever i do i absolutely must get out of renting. I could write a book on why that causes me to wake up every morning depressed and worried 24/7/365.

I do like fishing tho, and the area is full of lakes so i;d surely get back into that after about a 20 year layoff due to the crowded shitty walmart like lakes down here. The riding up there looks to be really nice too, tho less days per year to ride.

I like the idea of life in the country. You might find it relaxing, and your stress levels go down.
Fishing is one of my favorite hobbies, being by the water is soothing. It might take a while to get used to. You won't have society impinging on your mind. I have an extra heated jacket that I can give you for the cooler weather. Cooler dense air brings out the beast in my bike. Your a survivor Daz, you will be fine if you don't look to hard at it as good or bad. It's just new

Thats exactly what i keep telling myself....don't overthink it, just do it and take it day by day and look at the good things. Still, 64 years in the big city never living out of about a 15 mile radius....seems like dying and being reincarnated. But you never know. In any case thanks for the offer, but i have heavy leather jacket that keeps me warm enough that my face and legs will give in before my arms and abdomen does.

Over thinking is a habit and not always accurate at predicting the future. It might be a healthy alternative if it works out for you.

Is that fresh water, salt or both? You might have alot of trout streams. I picture pristine settings, would that be true?

fresh, and all i know about the area is from google earth but it does look pretty pristine. It's quite rural so definately not crowded, no lakes with parking lots and pay to park BS. It's all pretty much natural settings. Find a lake, pull up, fish. Not like in so cal where you pay to park and end up standing shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of non english speaking people some of whom are basically living in the bushes on the lake.

I pretty much stick to bass because u can't really catch and release trout (andwhy would u want to anyways?) and due to mercury in all the lakes in Ca at least u aren't supposed to eat them more then about once a month. I really prefer catching and eating but if u don't practice catch and release you pretty much can't fish in Ca more than once a month safely according to fish and game at least.

I also catch and release. For me cleaning fish would take the fun right out of it. Salt water fish I eat and I am not far from the ocean and then again the "Bonefish Grill" is even closer

Thats a big'n ! yeah, i feel the same in that i hate cleaning them. But i just see it as sorta senseless throwing them back. But i would eat them once a month as per the recommended max.
