| Posted : 31 Aug 2010 - 03:00 Post title : Hot Legs ... Normal? | | I'm still in break-in, but loving every mile. Maybe it's just that I'm not used to a big engine and big heat, but is it normal that the crank cover and clutch/primary cover (I think that's what it is- the chrome cover on the left side) are so hot after a ride? Maybe I'm just thinking liquid cooled would be, well.. cooler. But got home from a ride tonight, and after sitting for an hour, the chrome was still pretty darn warm.
Not related - I also am noticing a knocking feel in my left foot/peg at about 2300 rpm, smooth above that, but not sure if it's just a balance thing with a twin this big. Anyone else notice anything like this?
Still about another 300 to go until the break-in service but don't want to do any harm by waiting.
Thanks all! You're always a wealth of information!

I think once we have the ability to tune the bikes to run richer like they should, the temps will drop some. You also could be a bit hotter just because at 300 miles your engine should have a good bit more friction than one thats broken in. As for knocking, everyone has noticed this bike tends to make all sorts of random clanks and rattles that gradually go away as the miles pile up.

It does get hot ,i'm thinking of doing baked potatoes on mine on the next run. Don't forget that the coolant only cools the cyl head.
I kept my run in to less than 3k rpm for the first 500 miles and no more than 3800 for the next 500. It runs sweet as cake now.

Yea, it's been in the 90's here too, and have been feeling that warm blast of air up the legs from the fans too. 'Course I'll probably appreciate that "feature" in late October.
Thanks all! Puts my mind at ease and now I can enjoy the ride even more.. is that possible?

even better, a couple of ears of sweet corn smell great roasting on the engine, and you can pick them up while you are out riding around the countryside.
that or the smell of roasting nuts when that fan comes on! - not so pleasant....

(Re: mag10) | | Hot primary cover: The cover is relatively thin and the engine's oil is splashing all over the inside of that cover as it is lubricating the primary chain and clutch. If you were to touch your car's oil pan after a drive I bet it would be just as hot. Nothing wrong, it is what it is.
General heat: The air seems to hit the lower part of the engine and disperse directly onto your legs at speed, this of course is after the air has gone through the radiator and over the headers picking up a bunch of heat. Once the outside temp climbs over 90 F you can really feel it.

I don't know if any of you have a windshield mounted or not but I have the Short one and when the speed gets above 45 MPH the hot air from the engine comes straight up behind the tank into my belt buckle and chest, then on up under my helmet. I can put my hand down where the seat meets the gas tank and it's just like a hair drier blowing up both sides. I think I saw a thread elsewhere that said the windshield lowers keep this from happening but at $150.00 a pair, I don't want to buy them and then still have the feeling that my chestnuts are roasting on an open flame. (sorry about that, just thinking about my wife getting me the short TORS for Christmas).
At least the wind is diverted from my legs so I don't feel it very much there.

I ride without my windscreen when its above 80.
I put a 170 miles on last night with the local RAT Pack. Nice ride, but it was 91 degrees (33 Celsius) when we left at 6:30 PM. My upper body stayed cool enough without the screen on, but I could feel every time the fan came on and it came on a lot at speed.

Yep this is what I am talking about. It gets insanely hot and humid in Charleston during August and it feels like a convection oven with the heat bouncing off of your legs and then swirling around your chest.
