Have you ridden the bike for straight out performance before? If not I can give you some pointers I have discovered, if you wish of course.

I have found through my personal experience and flogging of the TB these tips might be beneficial.

1. A 3500 rpm launch speed with limited clutch slipping will yield a fast hooked-up take off.
2. Shift at 5300 to 5500 rpms
3. When shifting keep the throttle wide open and dont let off. It has a rev limiter so you wont blow the engine if you dont shift quick enough
4. Slip the clutch just enough to take the strain off the drive train for a gear change (about 15%). Remember to keep a WOT.
5. Number four and five take practice to get the speed and coordination right.
6. Hang on tight because hitting the gears at wot will cause the front to get light when it jumps.
7. Have fun

I would tend to agree with cornerB, but i would also suggest trying at least one run short shifting and see what happens. I find the bike sorta sits there gaining very slowly at higher RPMs. i wouldn't be surprised if you could do as well or better shifting sooner. Whatever you do i'm extremely anxious to see. Someone else did this and the results weren't very good. Something like mid 13's i think. I know this bike can shave probably close to a second with a great tuning and open airways. definately with the BB.....i forgot FL40....is yours 1700?

yes the bike is a 1700 with BC exhaust. i am a bit dissapointed with the run, but my launch is still weak. i chaved .2 off my first run just launching better. i can shave another .2 if i grow a larger pair and let it rip. here were the numbers

R/T - .658
60' - 1.953
330 - 5.374
1/8 - 8.299
mph - 82.55
1000 - 10.879
1/4 - 13.126
mph - 99.57

i think the bike is capable of a 12.9 with a good solid launch. i already knew the bike makes big tq and lacks hp and running on the track really exploits the lack of hp we have. i think i did o.k for my first time ever running on a track. anyone who knows racing have any input on how me and the bike did?

Those numbers seem pretty good for a weekend warrior to me. Well done!

I'd guess a pro could get at least 0.5 sec better. Particularly in the reaction time. I'm sure there's an optimal RPM to shift at as well. I'd guess 5500 or so, judging from the HP curve. What RPM did you shift at? How did you launch?

i've been saying this all along. the speedmaster was exactly the same, and once i did the filter/pipe airbox mod things and jetted it correctly, the top end of the rev spectrum improved in a big big way. It went from having nothing there in freeway roll-on's to about as good as my Tbird is. The speedy was like a friggin honda 350 before i did that. The bottom and mids improved a little, but above about 4-5000 rpms it literally improved 50%. So once we are able to do the air mods and tune the bike correctly you will see big improvements. Also realize that you are new to this and when a magazine for example tests a bike's 1/4 mile ET they have someone who knows how to burn the tire and leave the line WOT. i have no doubt that right there will gain at least a 1/2 second. Don't feel bad. these bikes are choking and we WILL open them up once we have a tuning solution.

Great run. As far as I'm concerned low 13s on a cruiser is excellent. Well done.

Not one for noticing standing 1/4 mile times - what does this time compare with ?

Thanks for the update. With a little fine tuning of reaction time and launch strategy, its realistic to see you hitting high 12s. This is good in my opinion for a bike weighing in over 700lbs.

So when are you going back?

Well done man. Those times are inline with the times that where posted by Cycle World and their TB vs Wide Glide article and those guys do it all the time. How about your shifts, where they at WOT and where you pulling the clutch all the way in or where you barley slipping it? What did you find out about your launches?

To be honest I'm not into quarter mile times much either now. I'm embarrassed to say it was 30 years ago when I used to mess around with my mates who spent every cent on their 351 V8 cars and thought they were Christmas with times in the low 15's. I know you can't compare 30 years ago to today or cars to bikes but it gave me an insight into how much work you had to do to save just points of a second let alone a half second. I was just reading an article on the Rocket Roaster and just for a comparison an experienced rider was getting 12.43 seconds .

Thats surprises me having demo'd a R3. the thing was a beast, and the roadster is supposed to be stronger. heck, back on the day honda 750's were in the low or mid 13's as i recall. 750cc compared to 2400.....man, is the EPA really screwing things up that much?

Daz,

I think it has to do more with how quickly the motor can gain revs. The longer the stroke and heavier the flywheel the slower they are to accelerate.

I agree 100%. Especially because of the huge balancers. I also however think it's capable of much better performance. It just tales more effort/changes.

i was using the clutch for shifts, i know i lose time but i can get myself to shift while staying wot. i have no idea what i was launching at. i think 3-3500k and slip the clutch the first few feet. also the rocket will run 11.2 not 12.4, that must be a mistake.

11.2 for the 1/4 for the R3 Roadster would be a great time. Motorcycle USA did a comparo versus the VMax and did track sessions with both. The R3 got a slightly underwhelming 11.9 sec at 113 mph while the Vmax got a 10.6 at 130 mph. I think the Vmax is pretty ugly, but it's a beast! Here's the link.

I think the best the 1700 could do would be mid 12's, personally.

I know. I was just illustrating what the R3 is capable of in the 1/4 mile. I think the comparison is pretty random, honestly. Apples and oranges.
