I know of Dakota digital.
Link They make a nice assortment of digital's that would work nice on the thunderbird and would fit nicely just above the bar's in the centre.
Does anyone know of any other manufacturers of digital speedometers?

Oh, well... I did it for you: Link to veypor
I have used Dakota Digital stuff before... great gauges.

I always thought that due to the 'Bird using a CAN bus system, it makes it ion impossible to use most of the things out there!?

Hey Birdy,
I am fairly sure that there are can interface equipment out there, or adapters that will work

CAN is only implemented in the internal sensor bus. If you are displaying or diagnosing, it's still OBD2 for output.
CAN > ECM > OBD2
I had this conversation with the TuneECU guy. He can't used CAN, he has to have OBD. Ergo sun, it works. So, no CAN out.

You have an even more useful alternative at the same location. That's where I mounted my GPS which has about the most accurate speedometer you can get included. In GPS mode it shows the speed in a small window in the lower corner, very readable day or night. Or you can put it in a digital mode that shows all of the trip info plus a large circle right in the center of the screen with the speed in digits.

On long trips, as Feduke suggests, I have a GPS that shows speed, but in reality, In 5th and 6th gear, I know the approximate RPM by the sound of the engine and from that, I know my approximate speed.

I to don't use it much (lol hard to) but when slowing down for city's and town's that have photo radar set up on the edge it is nice to know if you have slowed down enough to not get a ticket sent in the mail.
I to know how the bird feels over 3000 rpm. in 5'th and 6'th
I do like the idea of a gps, for some reason never thought of that

| Posted : 11 Aug 2010 - 22:28 Post title : Re: Digital speedometers (Re: rotog) | | The only motorcycle specific GPS I know of is either of the two Garmin Zumos. Of course internet prices are best. Personally I like the old one (the 550.) The newer one is smaller but lacks several of the features I really use. You can probably pick up the old one at a good price from someone that just has to upgrade. Try EBay and ask how long ago the software was upgraded. If it's over 2 or 3 years, plan on spending another $80 or so.
Don't be too quick to "adapt" a cheaper car unit. It will be useless or destroyed in every weather event and I think the biker models are reinforced for the vibration. Also a great mountiing system comes with the biker unit. Personally I've had great success with Garmin and not so good with two other brands. Good luck!
PM me with your email address and I will send you a piture of my setup. It's too big to put on here.

rotog - I disagree with feduke on this. I have two inexpensive TomToms - each was under a $100. The motorcycle-specific ones are very expensive - you could go through several TomToms and not equal the cost of a bike model. If it is raining hard, I put the TomTom away, but my smaller TomTom has withstood minor rains. Once the touch screen got a bit fogged, but it dried out. TomTom's also show the speed on the main screen.
Anyway, what you need is:
One cheap TomTom or Garmin. This Ram Mount:
The RAM Mount cradle specific to the GPS you buy. It attaches to the mount. This is the one I have for my TomTom 335S:
Yoy then need a USB power source. I use this from powerlet.com. Wires to the battery, routes under gas tank. Will power the GPS and your phone!

cool stuff, thanks i just got a tomtom ( like you say a few tomtoms later and you still have change from the bike model) and was looking at using the "rear assistant" to hold it etc but this is a very viable solution.
for us in the uk this is their link Link
