| Posted : 28 Jan 2017 - 20:29 Post title : Belt tension and wheel alignment fully covered | | After a rest over Christmas and new year i found the time to keep cracking on with my guides. I seem to get hits on the website, so that encourages me to keep going until all tasks are on there.
When it needs it i will do a guide on final drive bearing and belt replacement. But for now consider this the map to a squeak free belt.

A step I found important during alignment was to give the wheel a little shove forward to seat the adjuster nut before taking any measurements. When adjusting the nut anti-clockwise (loosening), the adjuster will often not seat itself without some gentle persuasion.
Having a belt tension gauge but not the Triumph tool, I found I could pretty acceptibly set the tension by just using the gauge only to insure I was applying 10lbs of force against the belt while eyeballing the deflection in the lower belt cover window; the notches are about 3mm apart (measured at the time of adjustment but not entirely sure right now). I found the factory tension spec (7.5-9mm, off the ground), like a lot of us have, way too tight and have mine at about 13mm/0.5in. The SM method is a lot more accurate but without the factory tool, this certainly worked for me and was really easy.

I did make mention of using a rubber mallet to ease the adjuster into place but i've made it more explicit. I've also made mention of your method of using the standard tool and then looking at the deflection in the inspection window, because you are right this will suffice for many people. Also belt chirp seems to come more from improper alignment than a belt slightly looser than written in the manual.
I made note in the intro about some people liking the belt a bit slacker.
It's great to know some people are using the guides and if it encourages just one person to man up and give home maintenance a go, then great.
