You can remove the original gasket and use the thin stock one instead.

I measured the stock one and it's 5 mm too unfortunatly.

Keep in mind, the gap in the picture is that profound only because I got down directly horizontal to it, it is not that pronounced from the elevation of standing. Even the stock one as you mentioned has a gap when you look at it horizontally. I didn't realize it until a stopped down to photo this one.

Eddy:

Is the second cap shown the Kury? Looks like the one on my America.

I tried the original cap off my America and it screwed into the Thundebird tank.

I like the look!!

Yes it is Pokey, since I was doing research I figured, it likely would fit, but I wanted to know for sure so I picked one up to confirm it. It was a nice fit and I love the look too. If you want a psuedo secure gas cap to fend off thieves, economical and not something a guy is likely to mess with because your just not going to walk up to it and try and figure out how to open it in view of the public if your up to no good. Clever set up and nice look and it really suits the bike too.

I was thinking the same on the America cap as well. So many options....

T-Bird logo is the way to go. I do want one, but I'm going to leave it up to you whether it be brushed or polished. I like the brushed, but everything else on the Bird is polished or chrome so I want what looks best!!

Should I go through your web site?

Well, got that cap today. Not bad, not great, not quite sure how i feel yet. It seems to be chromed plastic which is a big turn off, but i may be wrong. At least about the top. It looks good tho. A bit too high as eddy said, but not bad. The thing doesn't click at all and i wonder how well it vents too. I guess overall it's not bad and better than the stock one thats all scratched up. I think i may have been better off with one of those billet jobs, tho i'd have to see on in person. anyways, to those who like the smaller one like this you'd probably prefer this one. I may come to like it much more eventually. The look itself is the best part, tho i do wish instead of the thin wafer top it had a flanged edge that came down almost to the tank. I may look for a smaller gasket to bring it down more, tho i fear it may not keep a full tank from leaking. Or a ring of some sort to go under the top and give it that edge/flange. A chrome ring about 1/8" thick and the exact diameter of the top would be perfect, but the chances of finding the exact diameter would be slim. Anyways, overall it's the best looking cap i've seen to MY eye even with it's faults.

EDIT: did what atadude said....took the gasket off the stock cap and now it sits just low enough and looks really good. I didn't realize how much till i tried it, but that was really what it needed. Turns out that while Eddy said it was 5 MM, it was more than that. Either that or the stock one was smaller than i measured, but in any case the stock gasket was about 2/3 as big, and that little bit made all the difference. love it now !

By the way, the pop up cap with the added width is great. I think you have to both put the gasket from the stock cap on it to lower it and see it then in person to really appreciate how good it looks. Pics of it like the bird itself don't do it justice. Anyone who is contemplating it, go for it. If you like the look in general you will love it in person and with the stock gasket so it sits lower. really beautiful and sleek looking. I'll see if i can shoot some pics and get one that reflects the way it really looks. price is right too.

Daz, where did you get the cap and was it expensive? Does it sit flush with the tank?

From fasteddysports. And while it's not totally flush, it looks a lot moreso than in the pics. But i took the gasket from the stock cap and put it on this one because it lowers it a bit more. You could probably get it even lower with a thinner gasket or just an O ring, but that did the trick nicely. It really looks very flush in person. I love the look.

Thanks man. Do you have a part number? I hate to copy you but the cap cleans up the tank quite a bit and it looks good so what the hell. lol
