To install an Airhawk on the Thunderbird seat pan and hold the straps in place, I did this (4 nylon clamps and sheet metal screws). Works great!

Hmm I ordered the Airhawk 2. I wonder if I should've ordered this one instead. It looks like a good fit.

As i understand, the Airhawk 2 is more of a lightweight option...just depends on your riding needs. And the shape is different.

I'm fine without it for day to day riding. I just wanted it for comfort on long distance trips. I'll give the Airhawk 2 a try since it's already ordered and on its way. If it feels too lightweight.. I'll return it and try this one. I actually like the way yours looks with the cutout.

I have the Airhawk2 and use it when I'm going to be in the saddle more than a couple of hours.

When I took the ATWR kit down to Key West I used it. The trip down was 206 miles (and back a little longer due to a stop at Alabama Jacks for some Conch Fritters) but a lot of that is at 45 to 50 miles per hour when you get on the Keys Overseas Highway so it quickly turns into a 4 to 5 hour ride. Stopping along the way to take a few pictures and a liquid refreshment break (at the No Name Pub on No Name Key) helped but the Airhawk2 really made the ride comfortable. I just slip the elastic strap on the front down between the back of the tank and the front of the seat. It goes back about 3 inches so it's held in place and doesn't slip around.

The regular Airhawk has a thicker rubber membrane inside so it's supposed to last longer but I've had mine over a year and it still works perfectly. If you get one, make sure you follow the inflation instructions. It took me a few tries to get the pressure just right but I haven't had to adjust it but once in the last year.

I bought the Airhawk 2.. both the rider and pillion pad. My wife and I are heading to the Laconia NH rally next month and I thought it would be nice to have a bit more comfort on the trip. It's about a 2-2.5 hour ride to get there if we don't stop. Slightly longer if we make any stops. Plus we'll do a ton of riding while we're there. I checked the delivery tracking this morning and the Airhawk is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

Thx for the feedback.

Have been using an Airhawk 2 medium for the last 7 years for the navigator.

I have found by keeping the little lady happy, we get to travel much greater distances and enjoy each others company even more.

Admittedly, I have had to patch the air seat a couple of times from where the cats have tried to make it a little more comfy. These days I put the seat in a lockable cabinet when not in use.

Still, a magic piece of kit for the road.

Enjoying the Journey

My Airhawk pads arrived this morning. They fit perfectly on the seats. They seem well constructed too. I think my wife and I will be happy with the Airhawk 2 pads and I prob won't need to exchange for the "R" version. I prob won't get to test them on a long ride til next month.. but I'll try them out on some shorter rides to dial in the right air amounts.. and to get used to them.

I've got the large Airhawk 2 cruiser pad on mine. It was almost perfect. I really like your strap retainer idea. It's a real pain if they come loose and spring under the seat. I was able to make the Airhawk more perfect by adding some foam under the pad. The longhaul seat is too cupped for me. My nuts end up on the back seat in about ten minutes. Not nice. I added some carpet foam under the pad to flatten the seat profile. It made all the difference in the world. The pad still shifts a little when I'm in stop and go traffic. Other than that, it has been fantastic. That seat almost convinced me to get rid of the bike. The Airhawk convinced me to keep it.
