Finally got around to my exhaust makeover. Been wanting to do this for a couple of years. I had 32" slash cut Emgos on my Speedy and besides performance the sound was great. Have had a PCV since BB in 2011 and added auto tune in a custom made crossover. Used brackets from old pipes as well as having angle connection from old pipes to Emgo so shields would work. Suspect new shields off the Commander would have avoided the cut but was committed by then. Now have straight pipes which I also wanted. Gutted the airbox as much as one could and installed KN filter I had. Had single pods since BB but gone now. Crossover went 1/4 inch bigger with a tight fit on piping. I don't expect much leakage and if I have to high temp RTV will do the trick. First short stint was extremely noticeable " holy shit" improvement in pull and power. I'm thrilled at the end result. I'll have to do a dyno some time and will get to recording sound when I get a chance as well. Pipes cost $140.00 but welding, cross over and set up cost me three times that. Still not bad compared to some available out there and I got what I wanted. pipes need care but had them on the Speedy 10 years so Chrome cleaner worked.

looks good, can you show me more on how you fixed the single air filter on there out of the box?

Jango, these are 32" not 27" ? You referenced both lengths

Thanks for pointing that out. I should have stated that these are 27 on the Bird. I mentioned I had 32" on my old Speedmaster. The 32 would have been too long for the Bird in my opinion. Both are made the same except for length.

Edstorm, you will have to gut the airbox to do this. The filter is a replacement for the stock set up. But can be used once gutted. It's not a great fit so I glued a strip of rubber around the filter for a tight fit. As you can see I also added the sensors that are attached to the stock airbox to the back. Where it is attached is oval shaped. I already had this in the garage so opted to modify the filter slightly instead of sourcing a better fit. I got the idea from a member here. I can't recalL his name but he got a KN shorter with a Chrome back that he mounted sensors to. I'd be doing what he did if I didn't already have the filter. The airbox is surprisingly easy to tear apart and still have the battery tray. Drilled and knocked the bottom out and chiseled away at the rest to get to a glued bottom half where I velcroed the PCV and autotune.

good job, no leaks? how hard is it getting that sucker in and out when you want to, so everything else is oem you just knocked out the box , wish ya did a photo how to on that, think many would do it. I will look at it again (never have real close) thanks.

Several have done it and I wish I had done it a while back considering how easy it ended up being. I should have taken pics for sure. When looking at it one can certainly have reservations not knowing what problems or the outcome would be. Now that I've done it I would do this before spending money on the elimination kit. It does leave me a battery tray and although not strapped, I wedge a piece of rubber so battery won't move around. No leaks and removal a bit of a pain because the one sensor wire is tight. If I didn't already have the factory replacement KN I would have search for a slightly shorter KN with a better connection fit. I tried to search here for a member that gutted his airbox with a nice KN a bit shorter with Chrome back for sensor mounting. one other item I haven't addressed is small crank case breather filter I will need but ther is plenty if room for it and I should be able to find it easily and possibly locally

thanks, no worries I found that thread, K&N 5000 or something like that and he cut the end of it off in order to remove the sensors etc I gather so they did not need to be unplugged, how long did it take you to do it? And the small crank case breather can be bought just about anywhere, K&N sells them, I think fast eddy sells them as well.

If you look in my photo album, I did it too before doing the supercharger.

looks good , so you just pop off the top, remove the filter reach down with a dremel or something and start hacking away?

Aviation snips, a grinder, a saws-all, watch those fingers and wires. The material will snap away with use of some pliers as well. I advise you wear gloves because it can be sharp. Once you get to where you can squeeze the filter into the place, you'll need to remove the inner spacer from the intake plenum - it's an oval shapped rubber piece that has another rubber piece down the middle. This will allow you to insert the filter into the end of the intake plenum. You will need to insert a supporting piece into the filter or it will collapse when you tighten the intake plenum over it. I cut a piece of 20 guage sheetmetal to size and bent it around the inside of the filter and it worked fine. p.s. -There's plenty of these airboxes available on ebay if you ever decide to return it to stock

Why?

One more thing, are both of you running the filter to the inside of the plenum, the other post almost suggests he is running it on the outside of the plenum, I know the rubber on the filter is pretty rigid for the most part, likely the plenum that's softer or is it hard plastic? (I have never looked) sorry.

I'm running inside since it was a stock filter replacement. Never thought of outside. Will have to look if there is room but would expect you would need support as mentioned. Not so sure there would be any gain running outside other than prolonging cleaning because of a larger filter mass.

Dremmel was melting the plastic so put it away. Driller holes, punched, pliers, hammered and chiseled until I found what combination worked best for top sides and bottom Shit will fly so yes gloves and safety glasses a must. Once I got going it went easy and a relatively clean look. I did pull wiring away from both sides and left screw holes to bolt back up the fuse assembly.
