hi, just purchased a fenda extenda for my thunderbird, its the new one thats fixed with sticky pads that save you having to drill holes in the mudguard. they advise you to remove the mudguard to fix it properly. can anyone tell me the best way to lift the bike up so i can remove the front wheel. as there are no frame rails i really dont want to jack the bike up under the sump. any idea whats the best way to raise the front of the ground. i was thinking had anyone ever used a chain hoist with lifting straps around the handlebars. any advice will be gratefully accepted.

My local tyre shop put straps around the forks just below the top clamp and lift with an overhead hoist.
A few guys have fitted the extenda without removing the guard however.

I have used "Tie downs" around the handlebars and tied up to the exposed rafters in my shed to hold her straight...cant see a problem going the next step and lifting her like that... Or you could google "Becker bike lift" and see what they have...

Many thanks all, its the new extenda fenda thats fitted on the mudguard using automotive sticky pads, the manufacturer advises you to remove the mudguard and fit it in a warm enviroment. they say it has to be in a room at a certain temperature so the glue on the pads can cure. you can see a demonstration on youtube how to attach the extenda fenda. but many thanks for your replies.

I fitted mine with the guard on the bike and also used some urethane glue and its still there after 3 plus years

I also fitted the extender without taking the wheel off. But instead of using the tape used black Sikaflex. Masking tape held it in place while it cured.

Question - what size hex key do you need to remove the front spindle to get the wheel off?

It's a relatively common size for axles on motorcycles and all the multi fitment spindle keys I've ever seen include it in the range of 17, 19, 22 and 24.

I made a 19mm adaptor,,,
Got a bolt t hat had 19mm nuts about 60 - 70mm long fitted both nuts tightening them together very heavily, then put the bolt head in the axle and a flat spanner on the inner nut and undo , when refitting lightly grease the whole axle and retighten to 65 nm, cheers Tadpole..

PS I later shortened it to 1 nut and welded it to the bolt cheers

That's exactly what I bought shortly after buying my Tbird six years ago.The stealer I bought it from just happen to be selling em for 23 bucks,so I grabbed one and have used it many times on my machine alone, not to mention other machines I've also worked on.It was a GOOD INVESTMENT and I highly recommend it because it's a tool that can and will be used over and over again as it fits most axle applications, but can also be used on other jobs as well. There are many places that sell em and the prices will vary.So BUY ONE! You won't be sorry!! Dave!!!
