Anyone have the flat Triumph Luggage rack? Triumph does a poor job of giving a good profile/perspectives of their accessories. Does the "Flat" tubular rack sit horizontally on the bike or at a slight angle?

I am going to do a road test on framed Luggage this weekend, specifically Dowco Iron Rider (Formerly Willie & Max MCS) I used this luggage on a Speedmaster and it performed well on the passenger backrest rack. I suspect with this particular rack it will also double as a nice drivers back rest on a long trip.

Eddy, as you do you have connections to manufacturers and/or distributors, have you heard about anyone coming up with solo rack with backrest?

Edit : Still a bit dizzy from my yesterday 811km daytrip => spelled your name wrong => edited.

A train station is where the train stops. A bus station is where the bus stops. On my desk, I have a work station...

Nothing yet, and I suspect not likely as the Thunderbirds seat has a proprietary mount, good side to that is it is a stable platform, but bad side is..it will be specific to our bikes...at least that is how I see it.

Birdy, how involved is it to take the rack on and off? I am assuming it's a three bolt operation. I can just see that occasionally being a handy bit of kit to have, though I'd not want it on all the time.

thatch - three bolts. You remove the pillion seat bracket and bolt in the luggage rack in its place.

Eddy - I would be interested in your findings. I have the ubiquitous Cortec tail pack. I works OK, but I would like to have something with more space and being framed I would think it would sit more securely on the rack.

Exactly - except when you don't have the pillion seat fitted - you STILL have to remove the main seat and 'bolt' on the rack up front with the single allen bolt at the rear.

It IS A GOOD piece of equiptment I must say. A nice sports bag will fit wonderfully.
I intend to look into some kind of 22 - 25 ltr luggage system (bag) to fit onto it - for the long upcoming BA.com weekend - where I hope to meet Bedouin once again. Maybe the sports bag will do - but I have seen a nice system - just enough to fit a pair of trainers, jeans, a few Tshirts, underwear and tooth brush!

Let me know what you find Eddy....
btw - any news on the Butty Buddy?

Hi Eddy, just to follow up, here are some more images of the rack and its' fixing points:

Fixing points:

Here is a video showing the stability of the rack:

Birdy, the Butty Buddie is still out in the world under going tests...in honesty, have not had anyone rave about it just yet. Personally I did not find it comfortable, so I sent it out to have some lady riders test it for me from their perspective.

As for the bags on my trip to the Midwest Rally, they performed admirably.

I used the Dowco Iron Rider Roll Bag

and
Overnight Bag

Had them stacked up on top of each other, they worked very well even strapped down to the pillion seat which allows them to tip slightly as the seat compresses, but not so much so that they felt or were unstable. I had to get creative in ting them down, but ran a strap under the pillion. Since the pillion has four rubber legs you can run a strap through and it will not contact the fender. Also used the front shock with a nylon strap and the strapping that comes with the Iron Rider gear. As a result working with mag for a bungee hook rail for the T Bird, will take away the need to hook on places that could damage your finish.

I drove in the rain for the first 2.5 hours and since I had two separate rain covers for the bags which did not allow for total coverage. Dowco makes a full rain cover for use when stacking the bags, which should keep stuff dry, as it was only one shirt got even the slightest hint of moisture.

I like these bags because the frame contained in the two larger ones allow you to safely stack them. I even used them as a back rest and that is the reason I am looking at the fender tube rack. Watching the video (thank you Birdy) they should do well as the America Rack is much less stable or at least the same and it did well with a double stack on a 2500 mile trip with no problems.

So that is what I think about Iron Riders...Good stuff. A guy can do well with the other stuff out there too, Kuryakyn and Bikers friend (another that I really like).

Birdy,

Here is an option for securing items down to the pillion of the fender racks that I told you was being developed.

Should work great with the Triumph fender racks.

That would definably add to a more secure fixing.

Here is a quick loading up of a 3.5 kg tent and cloths sack:

So maybe those side racks would help anchor things down a bit!

A Bungee net would be an option as well, little more security even if used with just a rack. I started using them and they hold things in like a fish net holds fish!

Very, very, VERY VERY nice!

Solid!

Loads of pockets!

BRILLIANT to tie down!

Rain cover, carrying handle / straps included.

All in all - FANTASTIC!

*looks over shoulder to control that the woman isn't around*
I'm looking at getting the 'Roll Bag' that can fit onto the top!

Yeah - but it's a PITA to keep 'flipping through' the displays as I like to have the 'Trip 1' in the display 99.9% of the time.
Honestly - since I've had a clock on the bars, I can't be without one - it's so simple just to glance at it while you're looking back through the mirrors.
