So I picked up a Mustang Vintage solo seat last summer, and though it was a short riding season due to some personal circumstances, I enjoyed it a great deal in the 500-or-so miles I put on it.

Then as a lark and because my back's been bothering me, at the beginning of this riding season I dug out the OEM driver's backrest that fits in my OEM longhaul dual, and put those on in place of the Mustang. I'd never tried the backrest, so it was the first time for me.

Had I known a driver's backrest was the best thing since sliced bread, I would have ordered my Mustang solo with one , since you can't add it after the fact (and I knew that when I ordered it, but didn't figure I'd ever want a backrest). Live and learn.

Now I've the Sophie's Choice of either riding with my butt happy in the Mustang or my back happy with the longhaul-with-backrest. So far I'm going with the latter. We'll see how long that lasts...that Mustang was awfully comfy, and I'm finding myself squirming again in the longhaul with an all-too-familiar regularity. Plus the solo look with the curved/flat fender rack was great. But that backrest...man, it's nice.

I don't suppose anyone has a Mustang Vintage solo with a backrest that they'd like to trade for a non-backrest Mustang Vintage solo...? Yeah, sigh, I didn't figure so.

As it turned out, I figured out a third option , and that's to sell both seats (the as-new Mustang solo and the longhaul w/ backrest) and use the $$ partially pay for a Mustang two-piece w/ backrest. A little extreme, but at least I don't have to make that Sophie's Choice anymore!

I've listed both in the Classifieds section.

When I bought my SE 5 years ago,the first option I asked about was a back rest for the long haul seat that comes standard on the SE model. And since there was such an option,I ordered it the same day I bought the bike.Ya see, when ya get old and feeble, like me,it does make a difference in comfort.Plus I was spoiled because I also had a back rest on the last three machines I owned. I bought my T-Bird barely used, but a backrest was on my "must have" list.
I get the "old & feeble" part. Really!

I sold my 2010 Thunderbird in April and bought a 2014 Commander. I had the Longhaul 2 person seat with the rider backrest, loved it. The Commander seat is far more comfortable, but I sure do miss that backrest.

I have never riden with a riders back rest but could only imagine that it would be nice especially for long rides. I currently have the stock solo seat on mine and will probably add a fender rack. However, I think that I would really like to get my hands on the Fehling F6095 Fender Rack and Rest but can't seem to find one in the states. I'm thinking that Eddy should pick these up (hint). My only concern about this is that it is not adjustable and I wonder if it would force me further forward in the seat. Being tall with long legs keeps me from considering other seats like a Mustang which I believe also pushes you further forward sacrificing leg room.

Once you've driven a bike with the driver's back rest, you won't wanna ride without one,as it makes a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG difference in comfort, especially on those longer rides. As for the long leg part, all ya need to do is take a chain saw and cut six inches or so off each leg,and problem solved!! Smart ass Dave!!!

ya, i was pretty much one of those "back rests" i no need no bloody backrest, but after you get past the "not so cool looking" theory of it and use one you will likley never take the darn thing off. I like the mustang one it folds easy out of the way when getting on and off the bike and actually has adjustments so it functions unlike say the corbin one (IMO) but ya i really like the thing.

I have the Fehling. It is a rock solid piece of equipment, very well made. I found it sit to far back so I added some spacers between the frame and back pad until I got he just right. love it

Just to update this thread, I did end up doing just as I mentioned above, and bought the two-piece Mustang w/ backrest, using the proceeds from the longhaul w/ backrest and the solo Mustang w/out backrest (plus just a wee bit more $$, but the math worked well). Installed it a few weeks ago...love it, just as good as I'd hoped. I do have to say the Mustang backrest doesn't seem quite as comfy as the longhaul backrest...it both looks and feels a bit more slight (both arm and pad), and while it's nice aesthetically to have that, the comfort level, that rock-solid support of the OEM, does seem to be diminished some...not by much, certainly, but a small bit. Maybe it's a difference I just need to get used to.

What seat are you using with the Fehling? Were you able to find the Fehling in the states, or did you find an overseas dealer that shipped it to you?

I'm running the long haul solo, rebuilt by Spencer's seats. I ordered the backrest from the UK., I don't remember who I purchased it from but
Here's the original contact. info@fehling.de

Are you happy with Spencer's modified seat? I had him rebuild a Harley Street Glide seat for me a few years ago and it really improved the comfort. Did he change the seating shape of the seat, or just replace the foam with a better foam and retain the same shape?

Yeah man . he's modified 4 seats for me over the years. Shaved down the area a bit where the jewels rest and added the supercore. His work and pricing is top notch

Any chance of getting one that fits the LT? I had one on my vulcan & loved it. Not so necessary on the LT as the seat has better support plus the screen takes a lot of weight of your arms, however I'd still like the lean back feeling of a back rest.
