Is it normal for the TBird to be more difficult to start than other bikes? Had mine a week now and it has to turn over quite a few times until it fires........Seems to run ok. Is this a TBird trait

no. something is wrong with yours.
mine starts within 2 or 5 seconds. every time. and that includes 9000 feet elevation when cold, and 1800 feet when 107 degrees.

course mine is the easy starting silver.

is yours balky black? or belligerent blue?

Doesn't seem normal , mine starts after a turn or two cold or hot. Have you got any mods that might effect the starting .

Welcome on - where in Uk are you ?

ps - the blue starts as fast as it goes.

I used to have the same problem. I would alwase get it started but sometimes it would stall and I'd have to crank it once or twice more. Then I got the Tor's tune loaded with the pipes and it fires up first crank every single time.

I may have replied to you at the other forum, but if not, some of us have have 2 or 3 different types of starting issues that were cured when we got the TORs tune installed. It runs better with it even with stock pipes, and it cured most people's starting issues. Some of us had a hot starting issue like me. TORs tune eliminated it 100%. see if your dealer will load it for you. It will likely fix it, but even if not the bike will run better.

BARNSLEY.....! My drinking town in days past

I lived in a small village half way to Donny called Billingley, just after Great Houghton and before Goldthorpe.
My parents are still there and I go back to see them maybe once a year.

I must say - I remember Barnsley with a 'Jap Wispers' and 'Browns'. Last time I was there, there was a Sports Bar, Soviat Bar and goodness know what else....

Welcome Boobieboy!

I wouldn't say it's hard to start but I guess it depends on what you compare it to. My Kawi starts almost the second I hit the start button, the T-bird takes a little more cranking, but never more than 2 or 3 seconds. From what I remember the demo's I tried were similar.

I have 4,000 miles on my bird and am still having starting issues. It will never start without throttle. I have to give it a tiny bit of throttle. If too much it messes up and takes 3 or 4 more tries. This is starting to detract from the joy of owning my still new bike. At the 500 service I talked to the service manager and he said there was nothing wrong. But these are the same idiots that told me they lost the dealer stamp when I got my service done and had to write in the dealer name where the stamp goes.

Does your dealer have a Tbird on their lot? If so, try starting that one without throttle and then try yours. Maybe that will make an impression.

When I go back in to the dealer I will try that. I don't remember having this issue with the demo I tried before buying. Everyone I know with an EFI bike says they love them and they start right up without touching the throttle.

After I wrote this thread I went out to the garage (I was tellecomuting at home today) and tried to start my bike w/o throttle. It took me 6 tries. When the bike was brand new, I thought it was just me not being used to FI. I guess it's time to make an appointment with the dealer. I have a rally coming up in October and it's embarassing just grinding away.

I don't know if this thread is running in a circle or it's my memory from another thread. Have you tried the 12 minute adaption routine?
Worked for me and others. It's in the service manual.

- start bike - NO THROTTLE
- wait until fan runs, (time to fan start will vary, and fan may turn off after a few seconds. So, you have to observe.)
- start timer
- run 12 more minutes, at idle

You never touch the throttle. The ECM runs through some trial values and nails the throttle position baselines.

It's the first troubleshooting step, IAC.

I think you are right there was another thread going around about this. Yea I tried that when it was mentioned in the other thread. I'm just going to quit whining about it and either have them look at it at the 6,000 service in a couple of thousand miles or take it in before that. I just dread going in, because my dealer is so poor and really aren't that great with Triumphs. They are a Victory/Indian dealer first and foremost.
