Just did what was said couldent be done. Fitted the Breakaway Cruise Control to the Thunderbird with Avon Grips.

Breakaway Cruise Controls in the US keep stating that they dont have a Cruise System for the Thunderbirds. Thanks to this Forum and the advice from Daycruiser ( Geoff as He had one fitted ) and FES, We have proven them wrong and in MY opinion it would take bugger all with their expertise to put together a "Out of the Box" kit that would suit our bikes.

Eddy supplied me with a set of Avon Grips and went out of his way to get me a Breakaway System as there are no dealers in Australia, It is the 5CP02 that suits the Rocket 3.Geoff warned me it would take some fiddling around to get it right and all up including replacing the grips it took me about 51/2 - 6 hrs.

Fitting the grips was relatively straight forward, however being of ISO standard they had a bit of forward & backwards or front to rear slop at the bar end which I removed by supergluing some thin poly tubing over the stepped down section of end of the bars,The grips also had about 3mm of end float in the throttle cable housing which I removed by placing once it was all assembled a 30mm O'ring between the end of the grip and the throttle/switch housing.

Breakaway give very detailed instruction to follow but you do need a bit on Mechanical Smarts to make it all happen.

The Final Set Up

Close up showing the Anchor Arm that is anchored to the bottom bolt of the throttle switch gear. Note the Bakelite Spacer that allows everthing to line up better with the anchor llinkage.

The Spacer can be seen here also.

This shows the Brake Lever just about to engage the Brake Release system in the Cruise Control.

I removed the Brake Lever and linished about 2-3mm off the underside of the brake lever so that it had about 2-3mm to clear the Cruise Control Body.

Front view showing the Lever Clearence.

So Gents it can be done with some fiddling around and once again the Thunderbird 1600 Forum came through with the solutions to a problem. Thanks Geof and Eddy.

Nice work Gerry. Nice grips too. I have a different C/control (supplied by Mr F Eddy) but I like the idea of yours.

Does anyone know if someone makes a true cruise control for the bird? I had a look on the Victory site and noticed that they offered one for the Vegas model for 400 USD. Just wondering.

To answer your question Linkdog , specifically for the Thunderbird ? I have not heard of any

However.
"Necissity being the mother of invention"

And I dont know where you would hide it on the Thunderbird but I have a mate that has 2 R3's and on one of them He had someone fit one of those small aftermarker motor vehicle cruise controls that had the tiny vacuum cylinder that hooked to the throttle via a little ball chain.the one that had the small rectangular dash panel that used to have the on/off stitch plus the 2 up and down buttons.

Here is a couple of photos, Just Google Cruise Control - Then Images. the first one linked back to a supplier in the US

Thanks Mat.
I previously had a Kaoko and it was good, but I was always interested in the Breakaway, and I am sure you know the Ol saying about Curiosity Killed the Cat, well "Daycruiser" put the "Flea in my ear" as He had fitted one.So when Breakaway said it couldnt be done then there was the challenge.

The Breakaway works like a treat and I am real happy with the finished job.

Ezrider a couple of questions.

What is the Model Number ? and can you send some photos of the fit up, particularly underneath of the Anchor Arm & Brake Release. That way we might be able to convince Mr Breakaway to make an "Out of the Box Kit "
